Many artists have passed on, but posterity will always remember them as age-old legends of the entertainment industry. Country singer Jerry Reed is one of the icons of entertainment, whose role both in music and on the big and small screens will forever live on in the memory of entertainment lovers everywhere.

The singer, songwriter, guitarist and actor has appeared in over 12 films. As a singer, he released hit songs like When You’re Hot, You’re Hot, which earned him a Grammy Award for Best Country Vocal Performance, Male. Other notable songs include; Guitar Man, Amos Moses, American Man, Alabama Wild Man, Bound East and Down, Ko-Ko Joe as well as Lord, Mr. Ford. Reed’s induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame took place on October 24, 2017.

The Biography of Jerry Reed

Reed was born on March 20, 1973 in Atlanta. Georgia is the middle child of Cynthia and Robert Hubbard who made their living working in a cotton mill. When Reed was four months old, his parents separated and as a result, he spent seven years in an orphanage with his sister. Later, in 1944, his mother, who had married for the second time, returned for him and his sister.

The veteran entertainer had always wanted to pursue a career in the entertainment industry and spent his years at O’Keefe High School in Atlanta, Georgia writing lyrics and strumming his guitar. In fact, the legendary entertainer didn’t finish high school, so the option to tour with the Texas Troubadours and Faron Young was too strong to resist. Reed had to make the decision to quit school and pursue his dream of becoming a star.

His debut record titled If God and the Stream Don’t Rise was released after being signed by BillLowery – a well-known record producer, as well as a publisher at Capitol Records. He later joined the National Recording Corporation where he made recordings for the NRC. The famous entertainer spent a few years in the military before moving to Nashville to pursue his career in entertainment.

Reed had been married for 49 years to his beloved Priscilla “Prissy” Mitchell. Priscilla was part of Appalachia – a folk music group. The duo became attached in 1959 and their union lasted until the disappearance of the famous artist. Their marriage was blessed with two daughters named; Charlotte Elaine Hubbard, affectionately known as Lottie, was born in October 1970 and Seidina Ann Hubbard was born in April 1960. Her daughters gave her a couple of grandchildren.

The country singer has died aged 71. He died on September 1, 2008 in Nashville, Tennessee from complications due to emphysema. In their Grand Ole Opry debut, the Road Hammers, a Canadian Peasant Rockersband paid tribute to the great artist in their performance of East and Bound

Rick Makenzie also wrote a tribute to him which was published in Vintage Guitar Magazine. Members of his family, including his wife and two daughters, survived. Six years after his death, his wife died on September 24, 2014, at the age of 73, following a brief illness.

Appointments and Awards

Over the course of his life, the legendary entertainer got his hands on a good number of awards and nominations for his work in music as well as acting. Among his awards are: a couple of Grammy Awards, one for Best Country Instrumental Performance and the other for Best Male Country Vocal Performance. His People’s Choice Award appeared in the category Favorite Supporting Actor in a Motion. Jerry Reed also won the Country Music Association award for Instrumentalist of the Year.

Coming to his nominations, he was four times nominated for Country Music Association awards for Artist of the Year, Best of the Year, Singer of the Year and Album of the Year. It was also nominated for the Academy of Country Music Awards in the Song of the Year category.
