Whatever Happened To Bruce Springsteen's First Wife?
As we noted earlier, Bruce Springsteen felt like he didn't have to "pretend" with his now-wife, Patti Scialfa. This seemed to be the opposite situation from what he had with Julianne Phillips, as his music engineer, Toby Scott, described in Peter Ames Carlin's biography, Bruce. "Juli was a lovely girl, but he just seemed like he was trying to be a different person," he explained. "I think he was trying to develop a way of being on a social level. And Julianne wasn't anywhere on his train of thought."
Although Scott wasn't sold on the couple's romance, it didn't mean he thought it was a disaster either. "They were very domestic," he said. "She liked to stay in, make popcorn, watch TV, and have some dinner. People kept asking if they had a problem, and I always said no. I thought Bruce and Juli were doing great."
Springsteen's childhood friend, Bobby Duncan, echoed this sentiment, stating, "Juli was very down to earth and nice. She was trying to get her acting career going at the time. But mostly she was outgoing and warm and seemed like a really kind person."
Bottom line? Sometimes things just don't work out, and that's OK.
