Guillermo del Toro and his wife, Lorenza Newton, got divorced in September 2017.

The life of the film director is ultra-private and no one even knew that he had separated from his wife for over a year. The director himself broke the news of his divorce after he got side glances from people when he walked on the red carpet of the 2018 Oscar with Kim Morgan.

He disclosed that he and his ex-wife had separated in February 2017 and completed their divorce process in September of the same year. 

The reason for the end of his three-decade-long marriage is not disclosed to the public. There are zero clues about his marriage life and why it came to an end. 

Lorenza, his ex-wife had always been a part of his success from a regular Mexican filmmaker to one of the greatest directors of all time. They had met each other in the 80s when they studied at the same institute named Instituto de Ciencias in his hometown. He is a film art director who has worked on projects such as Dona Lupe and Geometria and is also a veterinarian. 

After their divorce, there is no information about developments in their private lives. All we know is that they have memories and their daughters, Marisa del Toro and Mariana del Toro.

The film director and the screenwriter's marriage was a surprise to the public. They had their secret marriage in May, which was only revealed in November.

The couple met on the set of the filmmaker's film Nightmare Alley where Kim was working as a screenwriter. It seems that she caught his attention due to the similarities in their professional interests, as he was also a screenwriter and a journalist. 

Before marrying the director, she had been married to a Canadian filmmaker Guy Maddin, and they lived together for four years until their divorce. They found each other after their first failed marriage and seemed happy to be with one another.
